AIHA University Live Online PDC: Noise Control Engineering



Course Description:
Noise Control Engineering provides practical training on identifying and mitigation common noise sources in an industrial environment. Building on foundational concepts like A-weighted sound levels and octave bands, participants will be trained to conduct noise control surveys, identify noise-generating mechanisms, and develop engineering controls. The curriculum covers principles of noise control, room acoustics, sound transmission loss, and specific noise control strategies for industrial equipment such as electric motors and pneumatic systems. Instruction will include basic theory, analysis of case studies, and hands-on exercises. The course is tailored for industrial hygienists and professionals aiming to implement engineering noise controls in occupational settings.

Learning Objectives:
After this online PDC, participants will be able to:
  • Conduct a noise control survey in an industrial environment
  • Select the correct metrics for noise and noise exposure measurements (e.g. SPL, Leq, dBA, TWA, octave bands, FFT)
  • Relate sound level measurements to noise dosimetry
  • Identify primary and secondary noise sources with respect to worker noise exposure
  • Develop noise mitigation strategies tailored to specific noise sources
  • Apply understanding of noise emission from machine operation to develop source treatment strategies
  • Apply understanding of noise transmission and material acoustic properties to develop path treatment strategies such as barriers and enclosures
  • Apply principles of room acoustics to develop room treatment strategies
