Characteristics of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Occupational Health in Participants of the Healthy Chicago Survey

Occupational health disparities driven by the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have become increasingly important as workplaces reopen and restructure and the workforce evolves. We describe the characteristics and outcomes of work-related stress and psychological distress to respondents participating in a population-based survey administered by the City of Chicago Department of Public Health during the spring of 2022. The survey resulted in 2,049 respondents reporting on work-related stress, psychological distress, occupational characteristics, and demographic information. There was significant racial, gender, age, and income disparities in self-reported work-related stress and psychological distress. A logistic regression model revealed several workplace characteristics that were significant contributing factors to increased work-related stress and the presence of psychological distress.
