The Feasibility of ACGIH Notice of Intended Change for the Nitric Acid TLV Short-Term Exposure Level (AIHce EXP 2023 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2023

The ACGIH 2022 TLV announcement includes a notice of intended change (NIC) to the Nitric Acid exposure recommendation. That recommendation eliminates a full-shift Time-Weighted Average and revises the current STEL from 4 parts per million to 0.025 ppm inhalable fraction and vapor (IFV). This notice seems an ideal candidate for a direct-reading instrument survey. This education session will examine the direct-reading instruments currently available, using the instrument appendix from the AIHA Direct-Reading Instrument Body of Knowledge (DRI BOK) framework. Participants will decide whether there is a valid way to interpret direct-reading measurements to determine conformance to the ACGIH STEL for nitric acid as proposed.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

• Use the knowledge, skills and abilities established by the AIHA DRI BOK.
• Describe the limitations and performance attributes that may /may not make the STEL NIC achievable.
• Demonstrate where policy or regulation may dictate its use (if moved from NIC to adopted by ACGIH).
• Provide a technical defense of planned actions in response to management or regulatory adoption of the NIC.
