National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) 652: "Standard on Fundamentals of Combustible Dusts" sets out the general requirements for the management of combustible dust fire and explosion hazards. This standard, along with a number of other industry or commodity-specific standards, provides the basis for dust explosion prevention and protection in North American industry. By now businesses should have: 1) completed Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA); 2) addressed its findings, 3) implemented at least some of the recommendations, and 4) the need to begin mandatory revalidation and update. This presentation will discuss: a) the requirements of NFPA 652; b) other relevant industry or commodity specific dust standards; c) practical implementation of explosion prevention and protection measures; and d) the timescale and process of DHA revalidation and update, as required by the standard.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

• Examine the requirements of NFPA 652 standard for combustible dust fire and explosion hazards.
• Prepare a Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA).
• Apply workplace explosion prevention and protection techniques.
• Establish what is involved in revalidation and updating of a DHA.
