Occupational Control Strategies for Particulate Matter in the Aluminum Industry

There are few opportunities in occupational health to perform retrospective exposure assessment with a large dataset of industrial hygiene samples. We used a database of over 8,000 full-shift total particulate matter samples collected in light metals fabrication and manufacturing jobs to evaluate the effectiveness of exposure reduction strategies on total particular matter exposures. We evaluated three main control strategies - (1) equipment, materials or processes changed (i.e. elimination or substitution); (2) engineering controls; or (3) administrative controls. We found that the reported workplace changes were generally effective at decreasing TPM concentrations, but changes in higher concentration jobs achieved the greatest declines.

Benchmarking Common Welding Fume Controls

Ever wanted to know how commonly used controls for welding fume exposure compare? This session shares key findings from a dedicated study on welding fume exposures. Uniquely, the key findings are illustrated by using video exposure monitoring (VEM) so that this valuable information can be best shared with workers.
The study was undertaken within an enclosure, with all welding performed by an experienced boilermaker. 4 commonly used welding techniques were assessed, including MIG, Stick, FCAW and TIG. 3 commonly used controls were evaluated, including PAPR, fixed LEV and on-gun LEV. Triplicate rounds of air sampling were performed for each test scenario with a total of 42 tests in this study (Av 48.25min / test).
