OEHS Management Metrics Selection and Application (AIHce EXP 2023 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2023

Use of appropriate metrics is an essential tool for all OEHS professionals. The new AIHA IH metrics manual updates information on metrics appropriate to the OEHS profession. This session will discuss the selection, use and communication of tools to measure the performance of OEHS systems. Performance measures are defined as the actionable metrics that an organization can use to assess their actions or programs in relation to their goals. While metrics are often used to determine progress toward established goals, they can also be used in decision making, problem solving, process optimization, and continuous improvement. Categories and examples of performance measures are: 1) status of IH program (e.g., self-evaluation, employee and public perception surveys); 2) presence and effectiveness of controls (e.g., ventilation rates, PPE use); and 3) program effectiveness and efficiency (e.g., injury/illness incident rates, lost workday cases, results of exposure monitoring).

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

• Perform a risk analysis to determine what processes or exposures could result in harm.
• Select risks with the greatest potential impact for long- or short-term monitoring.
• Establish a schedule for data collection, metrics calculations and review of changes.
• Identify data sources that are consistent and reliable.
• Establish control boundaries which determines when measured deviations require corrective actions.
