Evaluating the Performance of Your Aerosol Sampler (AIHce EXP 2023 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2023

A recent survey revealed a wide variety of inhalable, thoracic, and respirable samplers as being used for measuring metals and metalloids exposure in workplaces. In 2019, the Nickel Institute (global association of nickel producers), held a meeting regarding the development or adaptation of sampling trains to measure low levels of metals and metalloids in the workplace. The parties involved agreed on the need for international sampler comparison studies. The main objective of these studies is to compare personal samplers for measuring metals and metalloids in workplace settings. Sampler efficiency studies for relevant aerosol size fractions of these samplers will also be included in this effort. This session will provide: a) an overview on why sampler comparison and efficiency studies are needed; and b) the recent outcomes of a laboratory and field study funded by Worksafe BC (Canada). The session will end with a Q&A and discussion on the topics provided.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

• Evaluate why aerosol samplers may give different results in the same workplace environment.
• Recognize why laboratory studies need to be supplemented by field comparisons.
• Demonstrate how to obtain the sampling efficiency.
• Compare aerosol samplers.
• Identify the future needs for sampler development.
