Quality Assurance Is for Sampling Too-Part 2 (AIHce EXP 2023 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2023

At this time, AIHA LAP- accredited laboratories need to meet the ISO 17025 criteria for analytical results. Most people collecting samples aren't aware of the ISO 17025 criteria for their sampling activities. The AIHA Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee (SLAC) suggests that both are required to collect reproducible and reliable IH sample data. This presentation is being organized from the content of the committee's upcoming "Sampling Quality Assurance Manual". This project utilized field IHs and chemists to determine what QA aspects are necessary through the planning and execution of a sampling strategy to ensure that objectives are representative and legally defensible. This educational session will discuss the most novel and disputed topics that arose in drafting the manual: 1) calculating sample uncertainty; 2) accounting for the fraction of the sample that does not reach the sampling substrate (cassette/sampler wall deposits); 3) flow check of sampling trains; and 4) when and how to correct for temperature and pressure. The session will also be interactive by providing an open discussion on required sample documentation. At the end of the session, a panel discussion with the editorial team of the manual will be held.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:

• Collect information through the proper documentation.
• Calculate and apply sampling uncertainty.
• Discuss how to deal with cassette/sampler wall deposits.
• Apply temperature and pressure corrections.
• Plan to check the flow through the sampling train before and after sampling.
