Research Laboratory Safety in the 21st Century Webinar Recording

Course Description:
Between 1996 and 2016, a sequence of well-publicized serious incidents in research laboratories led to significant changes in community expectations for laboratory safety practices. Both the American Chemical Society and industrial research partners of higher education developed and shared best safety practice guidance for the research environment. This webinar will describe these emerging resources and consider how they can be best used in specific settings. The webinar will also consider how other safety issues, such as biosafety, mechanical and radiation safety interact with chemical safety practices and the importance of considering these elements as part of a comprehensive research lab safety program.

Learning Objectives:
After this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Conduct risk assessments appropriate to the hazards found in a specific research setting
  • Analyze laboratory events using the RAMP paradigm being developed by the American Chemical Society
  • Locate and assess new and emerging lab safety resources available on the Internet
  • Identify opportunities to partner with safety professionals in related fields to address risks related to multi-disciplinary laboratory work
