Industrial Hygiene 4.0 - The Next Iteration of the OEHS Profession (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

The term fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) was introduced in 2015 and was the theme of the World Economic Forum in 2016. Industry 4.0 is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between physical, digital, and biological spheres. In this education session, we introduce the provocative term Industrial Hygiene 4.0, an evolution from traditional IH. We will contrast current approaches to exposure assessment and other industrial hygiene activities, with tech-focused IH 4.0 ones. IH 4.0 has higher confidence in informed priors, faster data collection, structured and unstructured data, stakeholder-focused data dissemination, widely-affordable technology, and ethically-vetted decision making. The presentations will include: a) IH 1.0 vs. IH 4.0 project scoping; b) IH 4.0 big data extraction, cleaning, and tidying; c) application of machine learning algorithms; d) right sensors used right enables practitioners to collect IH 4.0 forward data; e) role of TWAs in 24/7-connected worker data sets; and f) new concepts that OEHS practitioners should start using.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Define Industrial Hygiene 4.0.
  • Anticipate the change in the OEHS profession relative to IH 4.0.
  • Describe big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
  • Recognize the opportunities for machine learning in OEHS decision-making.
  • Demonstrate how the right sensors used right can make IH 4.0 more accessible to workers and OEHS professionals.
