This simplified Business Case (BC) in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) course provides the participants with a framework and interactive tools. BC in EHS can be defined as a structured method used to justify a project (intervention) for decision-makers. It captures the effects of implementing programs or activities on employee health and safety (injury or illness), risk management, and the business process. The effects include customary financial business metrics, such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), return on investment (ROI) and Pay Back Period (PBP), which are meaningful to business management. This tool also includes non-financial measures, those that cannot be directly or easily monetized. In reality, the Business Case answers the question: What’s in it for the company?

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the elements of a successful EHS Business Case
  • Align current risk management model with an EHS Business Case model
  • Establish a context, scope, and objectives for an EHS business case project
  • Identify EHA Hazards and Risks
  • Analyze identified EHS risks
  • Evaluate EHS risks using the ALARP concept
  • Suggest beneficial EHS risk reduction projects using the Hierarchy of Risk Treatment (HoRT) model
  • Communicate EHS risks using the five-minute “elevator speech” template
  • Perform monitoring and review of an EHS Business Case project
  • Demonstrate proficiency using various EHS Business Case templates and case studies

Course Outline

This course includes fundamental EHS Business Case concepts. It is based on internationally accepted risk management methods and terminology. The authors will discuss how to assess EHS risks and align them with key business objectives. We will also review risk reduction strategies, financial and non-financial benefits of EHS interventions. Participants will learn how to use the five–minute “elevator speech” to effectively communicate the benefits of EHS interventions. The following topics will be covered:
  • What is an EHS Business Case?
  • Risk Management Model and EHS Business case
  • Steps of the AIHA’s Business Case Model
  • Establishing the context
  • Risk identification – align with IH Hazard Identification project (to be published by the end of 2021)
  • Risk Analysis – various risk assessment matrices
  • Risk Evaluation – ALARP concept
  • Risk Treatment – Hierarchy of Risk Treatment Model
  • Risk Communication – five minutes “elevator speech”
  • Monitoring and Review
  • EHS BC Case Studies

Business Case/IH Value Statement

Participants will learn to use proper EHS Business Case terminology and internationally recognized risk management process. This course builds on the prior knowledge gained in the fundamental IH courses. We will utilize new interactive AIHA Business Case tools developed for the updated AIHA® Value Strategy/Business case. The real-world EHs Business case studies present opportunities to align EHS risks with financial and non-financial benefits for the organization.
