Fire and Explosion Hazards in the Process Industries PDC Recording

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

Many operations in the processing industry involve handling and processing of liquids and powders, which could be flammable under the process conditions. Flammable gas, vapor, and dust cloud atmospheres can be ignited if a sufficiently energetic ignition source is present. Flash fires and explosions can lead to catastrophic events involving fatalities, injuries, community impact, facility damage, and economic losses. This PDC has been designed to show how: a) flash fire and explosion hazards arise in manufacturing processes; b) the hazards can be systematically identified and assessed; and c) the most appropriate basis of safety can be selected and implemented.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify locations where flammable atmospheres could be present.
  • Describe potential ignition sources under normal/abnormal conditions.
  • List measures to prevent and protect against flash fires and explosions.
  • Locate codes and standards for flammable gas, vapor, and dust fire and explosion hazards.
