The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and GRI have recently collaborated to develop a Culture of Health for Business (COH4B) framework that is being integrated with GRI standards. While their initiative is guided by a sustainability-reporting trajectory, it's ramifications are significant and have impact well beyond GRI's focus; as many thought-leaders view a culture of health (COH) as a potentially powerful foundation for organizational governance. This session provides an overview of the RWJF/GRI initiative, including the framework and its links to GRI standards. As well, the four principles (premises and literature) upon which the initiative's framework is based, are presented. These are: 1) the private sector is essential to shaping and promoting societal values, narratives and language around health and well-being; 2) business success depends on healthy workforces, suppliers, communities, and other stakeholders within the ecology of the supply chain; 3) successful business leadership recognizes health as a strategic priority; and, 4) responsible businesses measure and disclose their health impacts, such that they can be used to enhance operational and investment decision-making, ultimately reinforcing and rewarding behaviors that promote health. The current status of metrics-development for use by GRI is presented, along with ways to use existing systems to promote a COH in an organization.
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the RWJF/GRI COH4B framework.
2. Identify ways to apply the framework within their organizations
3. Discuss determinants of health that impact organizational performance, both inside and outside the fence line.
4. Identify how the COH4B metrics link to GRI standards.
5. Begin developing/strengthening a COH4B in their organizations
