The Global Standard of Care in the field of occupational health and safety remains one of the important goals for the international IH community. Unification and harmonization of the standards is not only a way to improve workers' health but to effectively promote fair trade. It is clear that consensus standards rather than governmental regulations can be the building blocks of the harmonized international standards system. How do we make consensus standards available for small business as well as large corporations? Do IHs always know how to use consensus standards for companies of different sizes? Is special training needed to develop necessary skills for industrial hygienists? Should IHs participate more actively in the standard developing bodies? During the session, members of AIHA Standards Advisory Panel will update the audience on the new consensus standards being developed by ASSP, ASTM, and ANSI. Special attention will be paid to the utilization of management systems standard specifications like ISO 45001 and ANSI Z10 for small size companies.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the role of AIHA in relationship to the standard developing organizations.
- List several major consensus standard developing bodies, relevant for the IH profession.
- Explain the importance of EHS consensus standards from ASSP, ANSI, ASTM, and other organizations.
- Define the major tools to adjust consensus standards for the needs of small business.
