Advancements in DNA sequencing have brought exciting new insights into the microorganism communities around us and in turn have created potentially powerful tools for solving microbial contamination problems in diverse environments. DNA sequencing buzz words are common in the media and at conferences, however, many industrial hygienists need a more in-depth understanding of this new technology. This presentation will introduce metagenomic sequencing as a new investigation tool for microbiomes in both environmental and industrial settings. The main objectives are to educate industrial hygienists in the basics of metagenomic sequencing and illustrate potential applications of this new method for solving issues related to health and safety. The session will cover four major areas: 1) basics of the four types of metagenomic sequencing, with a focus on 16s rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, 2) potential applications of metagenomic sequencing, as illustrated through case studies, 3) sample collection requirements, and 4) data analysis and result interpretation.
