As the technological profile of medicine advances, people and our employees are adopting new and novel additions and modifications to their bodies. Our industry has adopted some guidance for medical device wearers, but limited consideration and education exists to discuss the potential for employees with embedded magnets, electronic implants, or genetic modification. How do we protect employees from noise exposure when they have implanted headphones? What responsibilities exist when an acceptable exposure is rendered unacceptable by an employee who has edited their own genes? How do tritium implants and electroconductive tattoos impact workplace health and safety. When our employee population is subject to change, the IH community must be ready to adapt and lead the way in workplace protection. This education session will review the current landscape of biohacking, the potential impact to industrial hygiene, and a few hypothetical cases about combinations of biohacking and exposures. Emphasis will be placed on identifying assumptions which may need to be re-evaluated in unique circumstances.
