The commitment of the healthcare workforce to keeping patients safe is real and heartfelt. The key to leveraging that commitment to the benefit of employee safety is to make clear the extent to which employee safety determines patient safety and quality of care. Since, employees and patients are present in the same healthcare environment, both are parts of the same system. The sustained emphasis on patient safety over the past 20 years has made clinical care measurably safer. The adaptation and implementation of quality management tools and high reliability system approaches continues to be encouraged. Until there is broader recognition of the need to keep employees safe in order to keep patients safe, there will continue to be preventable harm to both. Patients cannot be safe if employees are not safe. Healthcare safety professionals must demonstrate the business value of integrating employee safety into existing processes centered on the patient and in alignment with organization culture. This session will share the experiences engaging the C-Suite to dialog on employee safety risks and opportunities at a not-for-profit academic medical center. Particular emphasis will be centered on designing a safety management system that aligns with organizational culture and supports business priorities.
