A 26-year retrospective on an OEHS career that will summarize observations, facts, academic coursework structure, educated opinions and feedback from fellow professionals on the challenges faced when striving to attain leadership positions within the OEHS field. The presentation will also provide an overview of leadership behaviors, management strategies and programs that can be leveraged by you and your organization to begin to change the answer to this question, as well as improve both the safety culture and IQ of your organization. The goal in the presentation is to provide an overview of the landscape of the field of industrial hygiene that contribute to the reasons why the answer to this question raised in the title of this presentation is rarely a CIH. Lastly, we will discuss tools CIHs can add to their toolbox to change the leadership landscape of the field, increase/maximize their competitiveness for promotion, and land those leadership positions.

- Describe behavioral tools and program initiatives CIHs can use to improve their leadership qualities.
